High-ranking diplomatic sources told Sudanhorizon that the new Secretary-General Personal Envoy for Sudan, Pekka Haavisto will visit Sudan next week, his first since his appointment.
According to these sources, Haavisto will meet with senior government officials to learn about the latest developments in Sudan, against the backdrop of the war, which is nearing its third year and has resulted in numerous violations against civilians, particularly in the humanitarian sphere.
Last February, UN Secretary-General António Guterres appointed the Finnish diplomat and politician Pekka Haavisto as his new Personal Envoy to Sudan, succeeding the Algerian Ramtane Lamamra, with the aim of intensifying mediation efforts to revive the peace process, end the conflict, and address the humanitarian and political crises.
Haavisto’s appointment was intended to strengthen these efforts. The appointment of Haavisto, a highly experienced figure, also aims to strengthen UN diplomacy in Sudan amidst ongoing challenges.
Haavisto brings over 40 years of experience in diplomacy, politics, and mediation, particularly in the Horn of Africa and the Middle East. He previously served as the European Union’s Special Representative to Sudan (2005-2007), participated in the Darfur peace negotiations, and held the position of Finland’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, as well as senior roles within the United Nations.
