Sudanese Journalists Union to Resume Activities from Khartoum

Khartoum – Sudanhorizon
Following a meeting held Thursday evening, the Executive Office of the Sudanese Journalists Union (SJU) called for adherence to the laws and regulations governing journalistic activities in the Sudan, keeping pace with developments in the professional field, guiding journalistic practices, addressing the challenges facing the press, attending to the needs of journalists, and considering the necessity of resuming operations at media institutions and providing for their requirements.
The meeting discussed revising the press registry, which includes more than 7,000 journalists in the country, in accordance with the general law and the Press and Publications Law of 2009. This is part of developing the union’s operational mechanisms and creating conditions for working from the union’s headquarters in Khartoum.
The union’s executive office noted several clear violations of the union’s constitution, the press law, and the journalists’ code of ethics. This necessitates reviewing the registry, removing the names of those in violation, particularly regarding their legal stances during the current war imposed on the Sudanese people, as well as their suspicious connections with foreign entities working to fragment the nation and undermine the state.
The union called on all journalists working in the field of journalism and media to renew membership and obtain the union’s press card. It also called on state institutions to recognize only journalists holding valid union identification cards, in order to curb negative practices in daily professional practice.
The Union formed an internal committee, headed by its Secretary-General and including members of the specialized secretariats and some members of the General Secretariat, to establish the standards and regulations for reviewing press credentials. Other committees were also established to develop plans for the next phase and to ensure compliance with the requirements of the Registrar of Labor Organizations at the Ministry of Justice, thus aligning internal procedures in preparation for resuming activities until the next General Assembly meeting.
The Union urged specialized press associations and unions to expedite the submission of their bylaws and membership records to the Union in order to regularize their status with the Registrar of Labor Organizations, in accordance with the Professional Associations Laws currently in force in the country.
