Sudan: Mobilizing International Support for External Debt Relief

The Sudanese Minister of State at the Ministry of Finance, Mohamed Nour Abdel-Daim, has revealed efforts to secure debt relief for Sudan, reference to those not covered by the HIPC initiative.
During his meeting on Sunday with Prime Minister Kamil Idris, the Minister of State emphasized the Ministry’s efforts to mobilize international support from organizations and the roadmap agreed upon with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for debt relief for Sudan within the framework of the HIPC initiative for heavily indebted countries.
Abdel-Daim noted the restoration of positive relations with the World Bank and the strengthening of its contribution to supporting productive sectors and humanitarian aid. He highlighted the collaboration with the World Bank on the agricultural sector strategy and the country’s reconstruction strategy.
He also affirmed the progress made in the state’s financial reform program and the policies recently adopted by the Ministry of Finance, including the policy to revitalize productive sectors, such as the national maritime and air carrier, Sudan Airways, as well as other productive sectors like livestock.
The Minister of State for Finance reviewed the efforts undertaken by his ministry regarding the reform of public finances in the country, including reforming and designing the procurement and contracting system and the electronic bidding platform, initiating the computerization of wages, applying international accounting standards in national institutions, implementing transparency and governance programs, enhancing financial reporting in the country, and the unified treasury system.
