US and UK Foreign Ministers Call for Humanitarian Truce in Sudan
Washington – Sudanhorizon
US State Department Deputy Spokesperson Tommy Pigot on Friday announced that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with his British counterpart, Yvette Cooper, to discuss a number of issues of mutual concern, including Russia’s war in Ukraine, the situation in Syria and Gaza, and that both sides affirmed their shared focus on ensuring a humanitarian truce in Sudan.
This meeting followed a series of bilateral and multilateral meetings focused on Sudan, aimed at generating momentum ahead of a UN Security Council session chaired by the UK, which emphasized the need to end the war in Sudan and the necessity of reaching a humanitarian truce to allow for the delivery of humanitarian aid.
Two days earlier, the US State Department reported that Rubio and his Emirati counterpart discussed issues of mutual concern, including the need for a humanitarian truce in Sudan.
The US Treasury and State Departments issued a statement following the imposition of sanctions on three leaders of the Rapid Support Forces militia, emphasizing the need to end the war in Sudan. The statement said this should be preceded by a humanitarian truce to help deliver food to affected civilians.
The statements from the US executive branch were followed by a statement from the Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Jim Risch, who stressed the need to stop the war in the country and the necessity of a truce. He praised the sanctions imposed by the Trump administration on the Rapid Support Forces leaders.
