1,354 Barrels of Cyanide Seized in River Nile State

The Sudanese Standards and Metrology Organization (SSMO) – River Nile State branch – has seized a chemical warehouse containing 1,354 barrels of sodium cyanide stored in a way that did not meet approved technical specifications.

Dr. Mohamed Baloul, the Acting Director of the branch, explained that the seizure was carried out in coordination with the Economic Security Department. He clarified that cyanide is used in gold extraction and that its storage must comply with the requirements of Standard Specification No. 3921/2014, particularly regarding its storage in locations away from inhabited areas and the provision of safety and security measures.

Baloul pointed out that current storing of the substance poses a direct threat to the health and safety of communities, in addition to causing harmful environmental effects.

Baloul emphasized the prohibition of storing any hazardous materials that poses a harm to human health without adhering to the required technical specifications. He affirmed that the SSMO will take the necessary legal action within its responsibility to protect consumers people, preserve the environment, and support the national economy.
