UN High Commissioner Concludes Visit to Northern State with Inspection of IDP Camp in Al-Afad

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, and his accompanying delegation on Friday inspected the camp for internally displaced persons from the states of Darfur and Kordofan in the Al-Afad area, rural Ad-Dabba. During the visit, he met with a number of displaced persons and reviewed the scope of efforts and services provided by the government and the local community.

The High Commissioner and his visiting delegation were accompanied during the tour by a delegation from the National Human Rights Mechanism.

The High Commissioner had arrived yesterday (Thursday) in the Northern State and met with the State Governor, Lt. Gen. (Staff) Abdulrahman Abdul Hamid Ibrahim, at his office, in the presence of members of the National Human Rights Mechanism, the Secretary of the Social Affairs Secretariat of the Northern State Government, and the State Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid.

In press statements following his meeting with the Governor, High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk expressed his happiness at visiting the Northern State, explaining that the visit aims to assess firsthand the human rights situation in the state and the violations suffered by civilians. He noted that the visit comes within the framework of solidarity with Sudan, supporting victims and survivors of violations, and providing them with the necessary assistance.
