$51 Million Tripartite Agreement Signed for Water Projects in Red Sea State
Port Sudan – Sudanhorizon
Sudan’s Ministry of Finance and the Government of Red Sea State signed a tripartite agreement on Tuesday with the African Development Bank and UNICEF (as a third-party implementing partner) to carry out a comprehensive package of water projects across the state at a total cost of $51 million.
The agreement was signed in the presence of Finance Minister Dr. Jibril Ibrahim, representatives of the African Development Bank, UNICEF, and the state government.
In a press statement, Jibril Ibrahim announced what he described as a major step toward resolving drinking water challenges facing residents of Red Sea State, particularly those in Port Sudan, fulfilling commitments previously made to the population.
He stated that the agreement covers all water-related projects in the state and also pledged continued efforts to address electricity challenges, noting that work is already underway to expand power services to all areas.
For his part, Red Sea State Governor Lt. Gen. Mostafa Mohamed Nour explained that the agreement is aimed at improving water supply systems across the state.
He noted that the project is financed through a grant from the African Development Bank and implemented by UNICEF. The program includes the construction and rehabilitation of internal water networks, transmission pipelines, a water treatment plant with a capacity of 10,000 cubic meters, as well as sanitation and wastewater projects.
The governor praised UNICEF’s previous interventions in the state, including water projects in South Tokar last year valued at approximately $1.5 million, in addition to its contributions in the health and education sectors.
He also expressed gratitude to the African Development Bank and the Ministry of Finance, emphasizing that residents of Red Sea State are expected to experience noticeable improvements and greater stability in water supplies in the coming period.
