UN Statement Warns of Severe Funding Shortfall to Address Humanitarian Needs in Sudan

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) issued a joint statement on Friday warning that Sudan’s humanitarian crisis was worsening due to a severe funding shortfall.

The statement said approximately 15.4 million people in Sudan urgently need emergency shelter and essential household supplies. However, humanitarian agencies can prioritise assistance for only around 10% of those in need because of financial constraints and insufficient funding.

According to the statement, Mohammed Refaat, Chief of Mission of the International Organization for Migration in Sudan, said warehouses had been completely emptied despite the distribution of more than 40,000 tonnes of aid so far this year.

The statement added that approximately 8.6 million people remain internally displaced in Sudan, while more than 4.6 million have crossed borders into neighbouring countries since the outbreak of the war. It also noted that more than 5.2 million people have returned to their areas of origin, only to find their homes, infrastructure and services destroyed.

The two UN agencies called on the international community to provide urgent and immediate funding to replenish emergency stocks and avert a humanitarian catastrophe that could leave millions of families without protection or shelter.
