The United Nations Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) has allocated $6 million to support the humanitarian response for refugees who have fled to Egypt seeking protection from the ongoing war in Sudan.
A press release on Monday stated that the allocation will bolster CERF’s rapid response efforts and the UN’s operations in Egypt. It will complement the delivery of life-saving support, including emergency food and cash assistance, water, sanitation, and hygiene services, as well as enhanced protection for refugees.
The statement highlighted that recent data from the Egyptian government indicates the country is now hosting an estimated 1.2 million Sudanese nationals, making it the largest recipient of Sudanese refugees fleeing the current conflict.
Elena Panova, the UN Resident Coordinator in Egypt, emphasized, “As the number of refugees continues to rise daily and with winter approaching, their needs are growing. This CERF funding will provide additional assistance and protection to newly arriving refugees, addressing both their immediate and long-term needs.”
The statement also noted that this funding marks CERF’s second allocation for Sudanese refugees in Egypt. The first allocation, announced in May 2023, provided $5 million to address urgent needs over a six-month period.
The earlier funding enabled UN agencies and partners to deliver direct assistance to 320,000 people, including refugees and host communities. It supported cash transfers, protection services, responses to gender-based violence, food security, shelter, and other critical needs.
