Sudan’s Ambassador to Russia, Mohamed Al-Ghazali Tijani Siraj, praised the longstanding relations between Khartoum and Moscow, emphasizing the importance of cultural and people-to-people diplomacy in strengthening the bonds of friendship between the Sudanese and Russian peoples. He noted that the two nations share common values that have been reinforced by the commitment of both governments, as well as by the significant role played by Sudanese students who studied in Russia and became integrated into its society, thereby helping to deepen bilateral ties.
Speaking in remarks carried by the Sudan News Agency on the occasion of the Sudanese Embassy’s celebration of the 70th anniversary of Sudan–Russia diplomatic relations, which opened today at the Library of Foreign Literature and is scheduled to continue for three days, Ambassador Siraj said that the Sudanese and Russian peoples’ love for their homelands has enabled them to preserve their sovereignty and territorial integrity against external ambitions, while also maintaining strong bilateral relations over the past seven decades.
The ambassador stated that the strength of the relationship was reflected in Russia’s support for Sudan as it faced existential challenges resulting from the war. He said Russia was among the first countries to clearly express support for Sudan, adding that it has also played an important role in the exploration and study of Sudanese civilization and is contributing to efforts aimed at recovering stolen cultural artifacts and restoring heritage sites damaged during the conflict.
Siraj explained that the Sudanese Cultural Days in Moscow program includes a variety of cultural and historical activities highlighting Sudan’s rich and diverse heritage and its longstanding connections with Russia. These activities include a photo and art exhibition titled “Sudan Through Russian Eyes,” featuring photographs and artwork created by Russian artists who visited Sudan, alongside archival materials and traditional handicrafts showcasing the richness and diversity of Sudanese civilization and culture, which dates back thousands of years.
The program also includes workshops, folk performances, traditional fashion displays, and a Sudanese cuisine showcase designed to introduce Russian audiences to the cultural diversity and heritage of Sudan’s various communities.
The ambassador further noted that the event features a conference on Sudan’s history, culture, and contemporary realities in dialogue with Russia, bringing together a distinguished group of Russian scholars specializing in Sudanese affairs as well as members of the Sudanese community in Russia. The conference aims to promote discussion and strengthen scientific, academic, and cultural cooperation between the two countries.
He added that the celebrations will conclude on June 10 with official participation from the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, other government institutions, representatives of the Russian parliament, members of the diplomatic corps, the Sudanese community, and Russian friends of Sudan.
