Sudan Chairs Meeting of Arab Ambassadors with UNCCD Officials

Sudan Permanent Representative , Ambassador Hassan Hamed, in his capacity as Chairman of the Council of Arab Ambassadors in Geneva, headed the meeting of the Arab Group ambassadors with Dr. Yasmine Fouad, former Egyptian Minister of Environment, UN Under-Secretary-General, and Executive Secretary of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD).
Dr. Fouad briefed the Arab ambassadors on the preparations underway for the 17th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UNCCD (COP 17), scheduled to be held in Mongolia from August 17 to 28, 2026.
During the meeting, she emphasized the importance of high-level participation by Arab states in the conference, given the growing challenges facing the region related to desertification, land degradation, drought, and water scarcity, and their direct impact on Arab food security, livelihoods, and stability.
For his part, the Permanent Representative, on behalf of the Arab Group, expressed his appreciation for the efforts of the Executive Secretary of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification and the Secretariat of the Convention, for their keenness to inform the Arab ambassadors and consult and coordinate with them in anticipation of the upcoming conference.
The representative has stressed the Arab Group’s aspiration for the conference to succeed in producing constructive and practical recommendations that serve the great challenges facing many Arab countries as a result of climate change, drought and desertification.
