Sudan Calls for International Efforts to Combat “Ethnic Terrorism”

The President of the Sovereign Council, lieutenant General Abdul Fatah Al Burhan, has underlined the importance of international and regional cooperation to combat terrorism and organized crimes, saying these are challenges that do not recognize borders.
In his statement delivered before the virtual presidential summit, Burhan has underlined that an international coordinated efforts is needed to stand in face of the mounting ethnic terrorism that targets the states the infrastructures and the vital services and health establishments in the Sudan.
Burhan took part in the presidential Virtual Global Call for the Future Summit which deals with discussion of the position and visions of states in preparations for the future summit set to take place at the UN, 22-23 September, 2024.
The summit aims to put in place an international future charter that deals with issues of sustainable development, international peace and security, science and technology and creativity.
In his speech Burhan has underlined that the Sudan is currently at the threshold of a new phase in light of the suffering sustained by its citizens from the ravages of war imposed on them, saying he considered the current summit an opportunity to revive confidence on the UN system to enhance the international cooperation.
He stressed that the Charter for the Future that the summit seeks to establish should serve as a roadmap for the countries suffering from conflicts created by interference of some countries in their domestic affairs. He said a strong international commitment would be needed to prevent such interference and to punish and hold accountable those who author such interference.
He underlined the need for such a charter to include efficient mechanisms to hold accountable the states that initiate conflicts and to take measures to protect those countries affected by such conflicts, stressing the need for transitional justice and national reconciliation, as the Charter must provide a framework to support these processes while respecting the specificities of each individual country.
Burhan has called for endorsing international support to build strong national institutions, citing the case of the Sudan where experience has proved that institutions are the real guarantee of security and development.
Burhan underlined the need to empower women and youth and to involve them in the reconstruction process, saying they are the pillar of real change, and that an international assistance was needed to educate and train them.
He stressed the need for enhancing cooperation in the field of innovation and scientific research, especially in the fields of agriculture and renewable energy, as these are vital areas for achieving sustainable development in Sudan, which will necessarily be affected by climate change and the impact of the war of aggression on the country’s economy.
The president of the Sovereign Council has pointed to the importance of respecting the sovereignty of states while enhancing shared responsibility. He said the Sudan looks forward to international support that respects its national choices and helps it rise again and achieve sustainable peace through national ownership.
He said Sudan’s experience in overcoming the war and its aftermath represents a real test of the effectiveness of international cooperation, “so let us make this charter an effective tool to help countries emerge from conflicts to build a better future, and our success in Sudan will be a success for the entire International community”.
