Sovereignty Council Announces Support for Gezira Scheme Emergency Fund

Port Sudan – Sudanhorizon
The Transitional Sovereignty Council has announced its readiness to overcome all obstacles facing the Gezira Agricultural Scheme, located in central Sudan, through support for the Emergency Fund.
On Wednesday, the President of the Sovereignty Council, General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, received the Governor of the Gezira Scheme, Engineer Ibrahim Mustafa, in Port Sudan. The Governor conveyed the Council’s interest in rehabilitating the Scheme’s basic infrastructure and providing equipment for cleaning and rehabilitating irrigation canals to achieve an agricultural revival in the country.
In a press statement following the meeting, the Gezira Scheme Governor said he briefed the Sovereignty Council President on the Scheme’s performance and the challenges it faces following the liberation of Gezira State, as well as current preparations to rehabilitate infrastructure ahead of the upcoming agricultural season.
Engineer Ibrahim noted that the strong support the project received from the Sovereignty Council leadership would positively impact the project and ensure the success of the farming season, achieving food security for the Sudanese people. He praised the efforts of the farmers in this regard.
Last week, Governor Ibrahim Mustafa announced his adoption of a proposal to establish an Emergency Fund to rescue the new farming season. The proposal was submitted to the Sovereignty Council, with the fund designed to include real stakeholders—farmers—and a number of relevant institutions.
The Gezira Scheme suffered widespread destruction following the occupation of Gezira State by the Rapid Support Forces militia in December 2023, during which agricultural machinery was looted, and irrigation channels were destroyed.
