The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided to award the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize to South African human rights advocate Navi Pillay, in recognition of her efforts to promote peace and international law, according to the announcement issued by the committee.
A press release issued by the committee on Friday stated: “Navi Pillay’s commitment to universal legal principles and her steadfast adherence to ethical values have been constant hallmarks throughout her long career.” A common thread connects her early work defending Nelson Mandela and others who resisted the apartheid regime with her work as a judge presiding over some of the most significant cases heard by international courts in modern times.
The statement added that she worked to hold states and national leaders accountable and instilled hope in victims of violence and conflict, noting that—in all the positions she held—she emphasized the responsibility of individuals and states to uphold the rule of law.
Navanethem “Navi” Pillay is a South African human rights advocate who served as the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights from 2008 to 2014.
Pillay presided over the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda in the late 1990s and early 2000s and served as a member of the Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, established by the UN Human Rights Council in 2021.
In a statement regarding the Nobel Peace Prize announcement, the Oslo Peace Research Institute (PRIO)—represented by its director, Henrik Urdal—affirmed that awarding the Nobel Peace Prize to Navi Pillay is a fitting and timely choice by the Nobel Committee. The award highlights the necessity of a stable, rule-of-law-based global order for fostering peace and places the principle of accountability at the heart of peace processes. At a time when these legal frameworks face mounting pressure, the award sends a clear message: peace depends not only on political leadership but also on strong international institutions. …and reliable, and upon the brave individuals who dedicate their lives to defending it.”
