The Chairman of Sudan’s Transitional Sovereign Council, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, met on Wednesday in Khartoum with the African Union’s Special Envoy to Sudan, Ambassador Mohamed Belaiche, in the presence of Sudan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ambassador Mohieddin Salem.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Ambassador Belaiche said the visit reflects the African Union Commission’s commitment to maintaining consultations with the Sudanese leadership on the latest political and security developments and to completing practical arrangements for the reopening of the African Union Liaison Office in Khartoum in the near future.

He also revealed that a high-level delegation from the African Union leadership is expected to visit Khartoum in the coming period.

Belaiche said he conveyed the greetings and appreciation of Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, Chairperson of the African Union Commission, during his discussions with General al-Burhan.

According to the envoy, the meeting also reviewed prospects for achieving peace in Sudan and the current challenges facing the peace process. Both sides emphasized the importance of intensifying efforts to overcome those obstacles in order to achieve security and stability.

Belaiche reaffirmed the African Union Commission’s commitment to continuing efforts to reduce tensions, describing de-escalation as a necessary step toward securing a ceasefire, which in turn would provide a key entry point for resolving the crisis. He added that the Commission supports advancing an inclusive political process that enables all parties to participate meaningfully in shaping its course and outcomes.

The envoy also reiterated the Commission’s support for a political solution and the launch of an inclusive national dialogue, stressing that state-building depends on national reconciliation, acceptance of others, and the promotion of peaceful coexistence.

“The Commission will remain committed to supporting Sudan’s unity and national sovereignty,” Belaiche said, “while closely following political, security, and humanitarian developments until the Sudanese people achieve security, stability, peace, and development.”
