Gabbani: SWIFT Recognition of EBS Boosts Sudan’s Banking Reform Efforts

Sudanhorizon – Hala Hamza

Banking expert Dr. Marwa Qabbani has described the recognition of the Sudan Electronic Banking Services Company (EBS) by the global SWIFT network as an important and encouraging development.

Speaking to Sudanhorizon, Qabbani said that while the move is significant, it remains only one component of a broader project that requires comprehensive institutional reform of Sudan’s banking sector.

She noted that political and security stability are essential for achieving the technical and regulatory readiness needed to reconnect Sudan with global channels of trade, investment, and finance.

Qabbani explained that Sudan’s current banking isolation is not primarily the result of a formal legal blockade, but rather a reflection of a high-risk operating environment and accumulated compliance challenges that have developed over many years.

She further emphasized that the path back to the global financial system does not depend solely on political decisions. Instead, it requires the development of banking institutions capable of operating according to the standards of the modern international banking system, including:

– Regulatory compliance
– Transparency
– Good governance
– Advanced financial technology

According to Qabbani, strengthening these pillars is essential if Sudan is to successfully reintegrate into the international financial and banking community.
