Open Security Council Session on Sudan Scheduled for Monday

New York – Sudanhorizon – Mariam

The United Nations Security Council will hold an open session on Monday to address the humanitarian and food security situation in Sudan’s war-affected states.
This session comes in response to a request submitted by the UK, the penholder for Sudan, alongside Ghana and Slovenia. According to the Council’s agenda, the Director of Operations will deliver the briefing at the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
Expected Highlights of the Briefing
Humanitarian Challenges
The OCHA briefing is expected to highlight the obstacles hindering the delivery of humanitarian aid to areas suffering from food shortages in Darfur, Kordofan, and the Nuba Mountains.
Civilian Suffering
The report will likely draw attention to the hardships faced by civilians in other regions, including Khartoum and Al-Jazeera states, emphasizing the widespread impact of the conflict.
Call for Ceasefire
The session is anticipated to stress the urgent need for an immediate cessation of hostilities and the facilitation of humanitarian aid delivery. This includes reducing bureaucratic hurdles and appealing to donors, organizations, and states for increased support to meet the pressing needs of those affected.
Sudanese Delegation’s Role
The Sudanese Permanent Mission to the United Nations will participate in the session and provide a briefing outlining:
The government’s efforts to deliver aid to affected populations.
Measures taken to facilitate the work of organizations and donors in fulfilling their humanitarian mandates.
Identification of parties obstructing aid delivery and engaging in theft of humanitarian supplies.
Background and Diplomatic Efforts
Al-Muhaqiq previously reported on the efforts led by the UK, as a permanent member of the Security Council and the penholder for Sudan, to convene this session. These efforts have been supported by Ghana and Slovenia. The three nations proposed holding the open session on either January 3 or January 6, and the Council finalized its schedule for January 8.
This session underscores the international community’s focus on addressing Sudan’s escalating humanitarian crisis and finding pathways to alleviate the suffering of millions impacted by the ongoing conflict.
