Sudan’s Representative in Geneva Criticises International Community’s Silence on Militia Violations

Geneva – Sudanhorizon
Sudan’s Permanent Representative to Geneva, Ambassador Hassan Hamid, met today (Thursday) with Nada Al-Nashif, the Acting UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, the Head and members of the Africa section, and officials concerned with Sudan at the UN Human Rights Office. The meeting was part of the Sudanese mission’s ongoing efforts to raise awareness regarding the atrocities committed by rebel militias in Al-Gezira State.
During the meeting, the ambassador provided a detailed briefing on the tragic developments in eastern Al-Gezira since October 20, following the defection of a senior militia leader in the region and his surrender to the Sudanese Armed Forces. He emphasised that the prolonged silence of the United Nations and its bodies concerning militia crimes has effectively given these groups the green light to continue their atrocities and violations. The ambassador renewed his call for a strong condemnation of the militia’s crimes and urged for its classification as a terrorist organisation.
