Minister of Foreign Affairs Addresses the High-Level Meeting on the Humanitarian Situation in Sudan

On Wednesday, Acting Foreign Minister Ambassador Hussein Awad addressed the high-level meeting held in New York on the sidelines of the current United Nations General Assembly session regarding Sudan. The conference, titled “The Cost of Inaction: Urgent and Collective Support to Scale Up the Humanitarian Response in Sudan,” was co-organized by Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United States, the European Union, the African Union, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), and the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR).

In his speech, the minister stated that the ongoing war was imposed on the Sudanese people from outside forces, highlighting its humanitarian consequences. He also outlined the efforts of the Sudanese government in facilitating the entry of humanitarian aid to those affected, including the opening of border crossings and airports, such as the Adré border crossing with Chad and Dongola Airport in northern Sudan. He noted that the international community had not fulfilled its humanitarian commitments while expressing gratitude to friendly and brotherly nations that have borne the burden of providing aid to those affected in Sudan.

According to follow-ups by Sudanhorizon News, speakers from the organising countries and donor nations which have provided aid to Sudan discussed the scale of the humanitarian disaster caused by the war. They issued calls for the international community to provide more assistance and increase funding and humanitarian operations. They also thanked the Sudanese government for opening access points for humanitarian purposes. They stressed the importance of continued cooperation in this regard, urging efforts to find a solution to end the suffering of the Sudanese people.
