Khartoum State Governor Ahmed Othman Hamza praised the sacrifices and resilience of medical professionals who have worked tirelessly under harsh conditions throughout the war to save the lives of patients and victims of indiscriminate attacks targeting hospitals, civilian institutions, and residential neighbourhoods.
The governor joined the staff at the Saudi Hospital and the Mohamed Ali Fadl Maternity Emergency Unit in celebrating the recognition of Dr Safa Ali Mohamed Youssef, the hospital’s General Director, who was named one of the 100 most inspirational and influential women in the world by the BBC. Khartoum State Secretary-General Hadi Abdel-Sayed attended the ceremony, as did the state’s Director-General of the Ministry of Health, Dr Fathurrahman Mohamed Al-Amin, as well as members of the hospital’s board of trustees, health ministry officials, and hospital staff.
Governor Hamza stated, “We take pride in the immense contributions of women in the medical field, who have alleviated patients’ suffering and brought new life into the world, even as hospitals are besieged by rebel militias attempting to displace patients and medical staff, turning healthcare facilities into military quarters in their war against citizens in dire need of care.”
He commended the BBC for recognizing Dr. Safa as a tribute to Sudanese women working in all fields.
Colleagues of Dr. Safa and members of the hospital’s board of trustees expressed their admiration for her dedication, describing her as a compassionate professional who has devoted her life to saving mothers from the dangers of childbirth.
