INGO Hints: West and USA Contribute to Worsening of Current Humanitarian Crisis in Sudan.

Oslo – Sudanhorizon

An international organization operating in Sudan has hinted that the Western community and the United States are indirectly contributing to the worsening of the current humanitarian crisis in Sudan, as they turn their backs on the humanitarian situation caused by the war in the country.

The Norwegian Refugee Council, which has been operating in Sudan since the outbreak of the war, said it was forced to stop several of its programs, which were serving children, farmers, and civilians at risk of famine. This was due to European donors reducing their contributions and the United States altogether halting its assistance for humanitarian organizations’ programs around the world, including in Sudan.

This comes at a time when areas such as Al Fashir and the Zamzam IDP camps are in dire need of breaking the siege of starvation imposed by the militias in Darfur.

In a statement marking what he called “two years since the Sudanese crisis,” Jan Egeland, Secretary General of the Norwegian Refugee Council, complained that catastrophic factors, including widespread violence, the implementation of US funding cuts, and aid reductions by several European donors, have combined to force programs that previously provided vital support to cease. They have also had to stop supporting farmers, whose produce is essential to helping the country avoid famine. He said his organization has to close access centers for displaced people and vulnerable groups where they could access the council’s services.

He said they had to cut education costs for thousands of children in desperate need.

“This is Sudan’s darkest hour,” Egeland said.
