IGAD Joins Growing International Concern Over Escalating Hostilities in El Obeid
Djibouti – Sudanhorizon
The Intergovernmental Authority on Development has expressed deep concern over the escalation of military operations in the city of El Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan State, including reports of significant military mobilization and drone attacks targeting the city.
With this statement, IGAD joins a number of international and regional bodies, including the United Nations Security Council, in voicing concern over the deteriorating situation.
In a statement issued on Monday, the IGAD Secretariat said that the escalation comes at a time when Sudan is already facing a severe humanitarian crisis, warning that further deterioration in the security situation could worsen humanitarian suffering and undermine efforts to achieve peace and stability.
The organization called on all parties to immediately cease hostilities and halt all military operations in and around El Obeid.
The Secretariat warned that continued escalation would diminish prospects for a peaceful resolution to the conflict and further intensify the humanitarian and security challenges facing the Sudanese people.
IGAD also urged all parties to ensure the protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure and to fulfill their obligations under international humanitarian law and international human rights law.
The Secretariat expressed its solidarity with the Sudanese people and renewed its appeal to all parties to exercise maximum restraint, demonstrate political responsibility, and place the interests, security, and future of the Sudanese people above all other considerations.
