Hazardous Waste Committee Disposes of Expired Veterinary Drugs

The Khartoum State Hazardous Waste Management Committee announced on Tuesday the disposal of 68 cubic meters of expired veterinary medicines and vitamins that had been stockpiled in veterinary drug warehouses.
The Secretary-General of the Higher Council for the Environment and Head of the Committee, Ghada Hussein, led a large-scale field operation to address the accumulation of waste in warehouses located near Khartoum Sisters’ Hospital.
The campaign was conducted in coordination with the Ministries of Health and Agriculture, Civil Defense, the Khartoum State Cleaning Authority, the Roads and Bridges Authority, Khartoum Local Authority, Khartoum North Unit, security and police agencies, the Chemical Weapons Prohibition Unit of the Ministry of Defense, and the committees for the reconstruction of the Alarabi Marketplace in down town Khartoum . This collaborative effort aims to eliminate environmental hazards and ensureing the safe disposal of hazardous waste.
Hussein emphasized the pivotal role of the Higher Council for the Environment in coordinating the disposal of this waste in accordance with approved health and environmental standards. The operation was carried out in the presence of the Deputy Prosecutor for Environmental and Consumer Protection, Anas Al-Habr, who monitored the procedures on-site to ensure compliance with legal requirements and strengthen enforcement of regulations within the legal framework.
This move comes as part of the Supreme Council for the Environment’s strategy to tighten control over sites storing expired veterinary medicines and to implement immediate measures to ensure the safety of citizens and the environment. This is in response to the challenges associated with hazardous waste in vital areas of the capital, and in accordance with the directives of the Governor of Khartoum, Ahmed Osman Hamza.
The committee also commended the significant role played by the Civil Defense Forces and the Chemical Weapons Prohibition Agency in cordoning and securing the site, and in overseeing the removal and sterilization procedures in cooperation with the Khartoum State Cleaning Authority until the work was completed. The committee noted the excellent coordination among its members in executing the task with high efficiency and in record time.
In the same context, the committee, through the Alarabi Marketplace Reconstruction Committee, appealed to owners of veterinary warehouses to rectify the conditions of their warehouses and coordinate with the relevant authorities to dispose of expired materials and prevent their accumulation.
