The UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy to the Horn of Africa, Mr. Guang Cong, has pointed out that this was his first visit to Sudan since his appointment by António Guterres as Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa.
In a press statement following his meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Mohi El-Din Salem, Monday, Cong added that the visit is part of a tour of the Horn of Africa countries to gain firsthand knowledge of their internal situations. He noted the UN Secretary-General’s keen interest in achieving peace in Sudan, considering it a crucial element for regional stability.
The meeting addressed the evolving security and political situation in Sudan, including the violations, crimes, and atrocities committed by the Rapid Support Forces militia against civilian infrastructure, public property, and private property.
The Minister drew attention to the support the militia receives from sponsoring states, warning of the negative repercussions for regional and international security should the international community fail to take decisive action against countries that supply the militia with weapons and advanced military equipment, particularly strategic drones and heavy weapons, as well as political and media support.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation called upon the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa to highlight the serious threat posed by the phenomenon of mercenaries and the external support the militia receives to security at both the regional and international levels.
