African Union Condemns Port Sudan Attack and Considers It a Serious Escalation

Addis Ababa, Sudanhorizon
The African Union (AU) has expressed “deep concern and dismay” over today’s attack on Port Sudan, a critical humanitarian and logistical hub in war-torn Sudan.
In an official communiqué, the AU strongly condemned the attacks, warning that it marks a “dangerous escalation” threatening civilian lives, aid operations, and regional stability. Port Sudan has been one of Sudan’s few remaining stable areas since the conflict between the military and Rapid Support Forces (RSF) erupted in April 2023.
“The targeting of vital infrastructure undermines peace efforts and exacerbates the suffering of the Sudanese people,” the statement read.
Key Demands:
Immediate ceasefire and return to African-led political dialogue.
Compliance with international humanitarian law, including unhindered aid access.
Support for AU-mediated peace initiatives, including the work of its High-Level Panel on Sudan.
The AU urged the international community to “stand in solidarity with Sudan” and intensify peace efforts, reaffirming its commitment to Sudan’s stability.
