The President of the African Development Bank Group (AfDB) highlighted Sudan’s critical role in ensuring food security for the African continent.

In a meeting on Friday with Sudanese Minister of Finance and Economic Planning, Dr. Jibril Ibrahim, held on the sidelines of the World Bank and IMF annual meetings in Washington, he stressed the importance of continued AfDB support for Sudan’s agricultural sector.

The Sudanese finance minister expressed appreciation for the bank’s ongoing support, particularly in funding wheat cultivation in the Gezira Project and providing fertilizer for small farmers, as well as financing projects in water, health, and COVID-19 response.

The Sudanese minister urged the bank to contribute to the reconstruction phase after the war and to assist in rebuilding the Arbaat Dam, following completion of the assessment and scientific studies, to address water shortages in Port Sudan.

The meeting also reviewed the progress of projects funded by the AfDB across member countries and discussed increasing the African Development Fund’s capital to around $25 billion.

The AfDB President thanked Sudan for its commitment to paying outstanding debts despite the challenging circumstances it faces.
