Abiy Ahmed: Egypt and Sudan Won’t Be Harmed by the GERD

Sudanhorizon – Agencies
Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed stated that the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) will not harm Egypt and Sudan.
In a statement issued on Thursday, Abiy Ahmed said, “Once it is completed, the GERD will not harm the downstream countries and will ensure year-round water flow.”
The Ethiopian Prime Minister also noted that his country’s access to the Red Sea is an “existential issue” for Addis Ababa, adding: “This will be achieved through peace, not war with Eritrea or Somalia, to secure a maritime outlet.”
Both Egypt and Sudan have accused Ethiopia of not being serious in negotiations to resolve the dispute over the dam and of pursuing a policy of imposing fait accompli. Tensions between Ethiopia, Egypt, and Sudan have escalated due to the failure to reach an agreement on the GERD, a crisis that has been brought before the United Nations Security Council.
It is worth noting that Ethiopia began constructing the GERD on the Blue Nile in 2011. The three countries signed the Declaration of Principles in Khartoum in 2015 regarding filling the dam and enhancing shared benefits from its construction. However, Ethiopia’s subsequent actions have demonstrated Addis Ababa’s unilateral approach to dam-related policies.
