Central Bank of Sudan Launches National Switch Services
Khartoum – Sudanhorizon
The First Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Sudan, Al-Mutasim Abdullah Ahmed, has officially launched the National Switch services by connecting the Omdurman National Bank switch to the platform, making it the first bank to be linked to the national system as part of a broader plan to connect all banks operating in Sudan.
The launch forms part of the Central Bank’s efforts, through its operational arm, Electronic Banking Services (EBS), to restore and operate the country’s electronic payment infrastructure. It also aligns with the bank’s strategy to reactivate and modernize electronic payment services across Sudan.
According to a press statement issued by the Central Bank on Thursday, the launch included the successful completion of the first cash withdrawal transaction through an automated teller machine (ATM) using the National Switch, marking the official start of the system’s operations. The milestone represents a significant step toward strengthening interoperability between Sudanese banks and enabling them to deliver more efficient and reliable electronic banking services.
The National Switch serves as a central platform linking Sudanese banks and facilitating the exchange of financial transactions between them. The system is expected to strengthen banking integration, improve the efficiency of services provided to customers, and advance the country’s financial inclusion objectives.
The Central Bank said the achievement was the result of extensive technical and coordination efforts carried out jointly with Omdurman National Bank as part of a comprehensive plan to restore and expand National Switch services in accordance with the highest standards of security, reliability, and operational readiness.
The First Deputy Governor congratulated Omdurman National Bank for becoming the first institution to connect to the new National Switch, describing it as a sovereign national platform that delivers comprehensive banking services by linking all banks to a unified network. He said the system will facilitate bank transfers and cash transactions, helping to stimulate economic activity, while also providing citizens with everyday services such as electricity bill payments, fee payments, and other electronic transactions.
Meanwhile, Saif El-Din Hassan Berri, General Manager of Electronic Banking Services (EBS), reaffirmed the company’s commitment to continuing its collaboration with the Central Bank of Sudan and other commercial banks to complete all phases of the project. He said the initiative will support the development of an integrated electronic payment ecosystem, enhance financial services, meet the needs of the banking sector and its customers, and advance Sudan’s digital transformation agenda.
