Egyptian Expert: Decline in Flour Imports from Egypt to Sudan and the Beginning of Recovery in the Milling Sector

Sudanhorizon – Nazik Shammam

The economic expert specializing in trade between Egypt and Sudan, Engineer Munjed Ibrahim Youssef, revealed a decline in Sudan’s imports of flour from Egypt, confirming the recovery of the milling sector after the war.

In a statement to Sudanhorizon, Ibrahim explained that flour exports from Egypt to Sudan have declined from a monthly average of approximately 55,000 tons during the first half of the year to less than 20,000 tons in the third quarter of the same year, specifically 19.5 thousand tons per month for the period from January to November 2025, according to data from Egypt’s General Authority for Export and Import Control.

Munjed noted that official statistics issued by the Central Bank of Sudan showed the provision of more than one million tons of wheat to mills, with import values amounting to USD 257 million during the first nine months of 2025.
He also pointed out that Sudan’s Minister of Industry and Trade, Mahasin Yaqoub, had previously confirmed that mills are now operating at full capacity, enabling Sudan to achieve a good level of self-sufficiency in flour production.

Munjed affirmed that the milling sector in Sudan has begun to recover, making it the first sector to show signs of recovery, and predicted that full recovery will be achieved by mid-2026, at which point Sudan will be able to dispense with flour imports altogether.
