UN Warns of Worsening Humanitarian Needs in Sudan

The United Nations warned on Tuesday that continued fighting, displacement, and funding shortages are exacerbating humanitarian needs across Sudan, amid deteriorating security conditions in several areas.
The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said that insecurity around the city of El Obeid in North Kordofan State continues to endanger civilians and force more to flee, while others arrive in the city and surrounding areas seeking safety and assistance.
UN Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq added that the organization and its humanitarian partners are continuing to provide aid to residents of El Obeid, noting that two million liters of drinking water have been provided to approximately 133,000 people in light of the city’s severe water shortage.
For its part, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported that fighting in West Darfur State since last week has displaced approximately 18,000 people from more than 20 villages, noting that most of the displaced have crossed the border into Chad in search of safety.

The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reiterated its call on all parties to the conflict to protect civilians and ensure rapid, safe, and unimpeded humanitarian access to all those in need.
In a related development, funding shortfalls have recently forced the closure of three health facilities in Central Darfur, depriving some 75,000 displaced people of adequate access to basic health services.
The UN explained that funding shortages continue to limit the scale of the humanitarian response, noting that only about 41 percent of the 2020 Sudan humanitarian appeal has been funded, totaling approximately $1.2 billion out of the $2.9 billion required to meet the growing needs.
