Sudan Ambassador: EU Stance Falls Short of Militia Crimes
Brussels – Sudanhorizon – Mariam Abashar
The head of the Sudanese mission to the European Union, Ambassador Abdelbagi Kabir, has criticized the EU’s stance on the events in El Fasher on Sunday, saying the EU has not yet risen to the level of the atrocities and crimes committed by the Rapid Support Forces militia and is disproportionate to the scale of the crimes perpetrated against civilians in El Fasher. He called on the EU to issue a clear condemnation of the violations and of those supporting them.
In an exclusive statement Kabir anticipated a condemnation resolution during the upcoming meeting of the EU Council of Foreign Ministers scheduled for next Thursday.
Kabir revealed that the mission has undertaken extensive efforts at the level of ambassadors of EU member states, the heads of the relevant foreign and security policy bodies, and the European Commission and Parliament. He said they were briefed on the scale of the crimes and violations committed by the militia in El Fasher. He also referred to the statement issued by the High Representative for Foreign Affairs, which acknowledged the militia’s perpetration of horrific crimes but refrained from explicitly condemning them.
The head of the mission added that they have also asked them to condemn the regional sponsor and the supporting neighboring countries, and to pressure the UAE to stop supplying the militia with weapons and to engage effectively with the government of Dr. Kamil Idris to ensure the success of the transitional period leading to elections and a complete civilian transition.
He added, “The European Union has a moral responsibility to pressure the militia.”
The Sudanese diplomat directly criticized the European Union’s inaction and its failure to exert the necessary pressure on the militia to comply with and implement Security Council Resolution 2736, which calls for lifting the siege on El Fasher, refraining from attacking it, and allowing access to humanitarian aid.
He said, “We informed the European Union that instead of implementing the resolution’s provisions, the militia used starvation as a weapon against civilians and killed those who tried to flee.”
He emphasized that despite the EU’s delayed response, it showed great concern and affirmed that El Fasher had awakened the conscience of the world, particularly the European community.
He stated that the international community had not been convinced of the Rapid Support Forces’ brutality and savagery, and that it is now convinced the militia is unfit to govern, as the crimes committed were documented by its own people and affiliates. He added, “We informed them that our vision for ending the war and establishing a ceasefire is based on the Jeddah declaration and in accordance with the road-map presented by Sudan to the United Nations.”
