The Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu, has extended his heartfelt condolences to the families and communities affected by the devastating landslide that struck the Tarsin area in North Darfur State, “which claimed hundreds of lives and destroyed an entire village in the Jebel Marra region,” according to reports.
The IGAD statement noted that this tragedy comes at a time when the people of Sudan are already facing immense hardships due to the conflict that has raged since April 2023, resulting in heavy losses in lives and livelihoods.
On behalf of IGAD, the Executive Secretary expressed his “deepest sympathies to the people of the Republic of Sudan, particularly to the families of the victims and the affected communities.”
Dr. Gebeyehu reaffirmed IGAD’s solidarity with Sudan in this moment of profound grief and emphasized the urgent need for peace, unity, and resilience, while also stressing the importance of facilitating timely humanitarian assistance for those most in need.
