Sudan’s Separatist Project: Broad International and Regional Rejection

Sudanhorizon – Talal Ismail
Since the Rapid Support Forces militia and its political allies announced a government under the “Separatist Project,” international, regional, and local condemnations have continued internally and externally, warning of the serious consequences of the action.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres has described the “Tasis Alliance” declaration on the formation of an alternative ruling authority led by the militia, as an extremely dangerous escalation that undermines Sudan’s unity and territorial integrity and threatens to exacerbate humanitarian suffering amid a protracted bloody conflict.
Guterres stressed that any unilateral arrangements will not lead to genuine peace, reiterating his call for a comprehensive national dialogue that brings together all Sudanese parties with the aim of reaching a just and sustainable political settlement.
Egypt Rejects
Since last March, the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs rejected any attempt to undermine the unity and sovereignty of Sudan, including the formation of a parallel Sudanese government, when discussions on the issue began in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi. The ministry said in a statement that “the formation of a parallel government complicates the situation in Sudan, hinders ongoing efforts to unify visions among Sudanese political forces, and exacerbates the humanitarian situation.”
According to the statement, Egypt has urged all Sudanese forces to prioritize their country’s supreme national interest and engage positively in launching a comprehensive political process, without exclusion or foreign interference.
Saudi Arabia Rejects
The Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs also announced, in an official statement issued Tuesday, its categorical refusal to recognize the so-called “Tasis government” announced by the Rapid Support Forces, considering this step a direct threat to Sudan’s unity and legitimacy and complicates further the crisis that has been ongoing for more than a year.
It stated that the formation of a government outside the framework of international legitimacy is a dangerous escalation that hinders efforts to achieve a political solution.
African Union Condemns
The African Union Peace and Security Council has strongly condemned the announcement of the establishment of a parallel government in Sudan. In a press statement issued Tuesday, the Council called on all African Union member states and the international community to reject the fragmentation of Sudan and avoid any recognition of the so-called ‘parallel government,’ due to the dire consequences this would have on peace efforts and the country’s existential future.
The Council also called on everyone to refrain from providing support or assistance of any kind to any armed or political group linked to the so-called ‘parallel government’ in Sudan.
Concern for Sudan’s Unity
For his part, the African Union Representative in Sudan, Mohamed Belaish, during the meeting with the Chairman of the Sovereign Council, Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, stressed that the formation of an independent civilian government of national competencies is an important step toward alleviating the suffering of the Sudanese people and improving services, paving the way for the start of the reconstruction process and preparing the conditions for the return of displaced persons and refugees to their homes.
Belaish explained that he conveyed to Burhan the greetings of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, reaffirming the Union’s support for Sudan’s unity and stability. He added that his visit comes within the framework of exploring ways to achieve peace, security, and stability in the country.
The Democratic Bloc Welcomes
The Forces of Freedom and Change – Democratic Bloc has welcomed the clear and explicit position issued by the African Peace and Security Council, which affirmed its categorical rejection of the “Tasis government” announced by the Tasis Alliance, its adherence to Sudan’s unity and sovereignty, and its refusal to recognize any parallel entity.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the bloc praised the positions of the Arab League and regional and international parties, which clearly expressed their rejection and condemnation of this step.
The bloc considered the announcement of a parallel government a serious threat to Sudan and the region, especially since most neighboring countries are fragile and vulnerable to chaos and division.
A Dangerous Development
The National Umma Party described the formation of the “Tasis Alliance Government” in Nyala, the second government declared in the country, as an extremely dangerous development that signifies disastrous consequences for the country’s unity and the integrity of its national fabric.
The General Secretariat of the National Umma Party announced in a press release its rejection of the formation of any government outside the framework of consensual legitimacy or popular mandate, as well as any alignment with or support for war projects. It emphasized that the only solution to the current national crisis is to move toward a comprehensive political settlement through serious negotiations leading to a comprehensive ceasefire, achieving a just peace, and restoring the path to civil democratic transition.
A Dangerous Step
The Governor of Darfur, Minni Arko Minawi, emphasized that the formation of the so-called “Tasis government” is a dangerous and blatant step that paves the way for international interference in Sudanese domestic affairs.
In press statements, he said, “The Quartet mechanism must be based on the will of the Sudanese people, not on foreign agendas.”
He expressed his rejection of any move that would lead to the division of the country or the violation of Sudan’s sovereignty.
