Government Tightens Laws and Regulations to Curb Gold Smuggling

Minister of Minerals, Nour El-Daym Taha, announced his ministry’s intention to review legislation and laws aimed to curb gold smuggling.
The minister paid a field visit to the headquarters of the Sudanese Mineral Resources Company Limited in Port Sudan, Tuesday, to assess performance and examine the challenges facing the company, which is the ministry’s oversight and regulatory arm.
The minister acknowledged that the mining sector faces significant challenges, particularly with regard to environmental issues.
He indicated that the ministry will work in coordination with other state institutions and in cooperation with miners to address these challenges and improve the work environment to increase production and productivity.
He also stressed the need to regulate traditional mining to become a regulated sector that contributes to supporting the national economy.
The minister emphasized that gold smuggling poses a challenge to the national economy, indicating that the ministry, in cooperation with relevant authorities, is reviewing legislation to curb it and maximize revenues. He called for the use of modern technologies in all stages of the mining process to promote the optimal use of resources.
