Foreign Minister: AUPSC’s Rejection of a Parallel Government an Applauded Step Towards Sudan’s Return to the AU

Cairo – Sudanhorizon – Sabah Musa
Sudanese Foreign Minister Dr Ali Youssef has confirmed that the African Union Peace and Security Council’s rejection of the Rapid Support Militia and its allies’ attempt to establish a parallel government in Sudan was an outstanding move and decision that reflects the genuine African spirit.
In a statement to the “Sudanhorizon” news website, the Minister pointed out that the African Union Peace and Security Council’s support for a member state facing serious challenges was correct, clear, and specific.
He pointed out that the decision indicates the African Union’s rejection of dividing Sudan or infringing on its sovereignty. He welcomed the decision, describing it as a serious and important step that precedes lifting the suspension of Sudan’s membership within the African Union.
Regarding Sudan’s return to IGAD, the Minister argued that the government of Sudan made the decision to pull out and demanded that IGAD apologise for what happened in its latest meeting on Sudan.
He said the apology came through a message from the President of Djibouti, Chairman of IGAD. Based on that step, Sudan has decided to return to the organisation. The Minister said he would visit Addis Ababa in the coming days to congratulate the new Chairman of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Yusuf.
The African Peace and Security Council had unanimously confirmed in a statement by all members its total rejection of any attempt to divide the Sudan or establish a parallel government. The statement also warned of the grave consequences that may result from such a step.
The statement stressed that no political, military, or financial support should be provided for an attempt spearheaded by any entity seeking to undermine the sovereignty of the Sudanese state.
