Port Sudan – Sudanhorizon – SUNA
Sudan’s Attorney General, Al-Fatih Tayfour, who also heads the National Committee for Crimes and Violations of National and International Humanitarian Law, stated that the terrorist Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia has committed heinous crimes that disgrace humanity. Chief among these are acts of genocide against the Masalit people in the city of El Geneina, West Darfur, and targeted crimes against humanity in the same state, including the killing of men and the rape of women.
Speaking on Monday at the Sudan News Agency (SUNA) ‘s weekly briefing platform in the General Intelligence Service hall in Port Sudan, Tayfour affirmed that Sudanese authorities will prosecute militia criminals in the country’s national courts. He praised the efficiency of Sudan’s judicial and legal institutions, stating, “We have a strong, fair judiciary and an active prosecution system capable of fulfilling its responsibilities.”
The Attorney General revealed that communication has been initiated with certain countries regarding the extradition of individuals accused of committing crimes. He expressed hope for international and regional cooperation in this regard, adding that if extradition is not achieved, proceedings will continue, and trials will be conducted in absentia.
Tayfour also highlighted crimes against humanity perpetrated by the RSF in Gezira State, detailing killings, rapes, forced displacement, and other atrocities committed in various villages and towns across the state.
He addressed the killing of the former governor of West Darfur, Khamis Abakar, by the militia and elaborated on incidents of selling girls and widespread rape. He disclosed that over 966 documented cases of rape have been recorded, noting that many cases remain unreported and undocumented.
The Attorney General assured victims of rape that their rights would be protected and urged them to come forward to report incidents. He emphasized the authorities’ commitment to maintaining confidentiality and safeguarding personal information, given the sensitivity of the matter.
Tayfour also expressed Sudan’s gratitude to Egypt for its supportive role in judicial and legal matters and for sheltering large numbers of Sudanese citizens displaced by the war.
