Coordination Office for Resolution 1591 Welcomes UNSC Expert Team

The National Coordination Office for the Follow-up of UN Security Council Resolution 1591 of 2005, concerning the Darfur states, welcomed representatives of the UN expert panel overseeing the resolution’s implementation in Port Sudan on Sunday. During the meeting, the Coordination Office presented documented violations and assaults committed by the rebel Rapid Support Forces (RSF) against civilians in the Darfur region. The Transitional Sovereignty Council’s media office shared this information in a press release.
Major General (Ret.) Ezzeldin Osman Taha, head of the National Coordination Office, briefed the expert panel on the country’s current situation and Sudan’s efforts to achieve peace. He reiterated Sudan’s welcome of the UN expert panel’s visit and expressed readiness to provide all necessary facilities to support the panel’s mission in accordance with its mandate.
This visit marks the first by the expert panel since the outbreak of the conflict and is scheduled to last for three days. During this period, the panel will meet with various national entities and institutions involved in monitoring the implementation of the resolution.
