Port Sudan – Sudanhorizon
The Acting Minister of Interior, Major General Khalil Basha Sayreen, chaired the National Mechanism for Civilian Protection meeting on Wednesday in the Ministry of Interior hall in Port Sudan. The meeting was attended by the Acting Director General of the Police Forces, Lieutenant General Mohamed Ibrahim Awad Allah, and members of the mechanism from relevant entities.
The Acting Minister of Interior stated that the meeting aims to protect civilians following the withdrawal of United Nations and African Union forces from the Darfur states. The mechanism’s role has thus been expanded to include the states affected by the conflict. He noted that the mechanism includes all relevant entities and expands its scope to provide the necessary protection for residents amid the conflict based on international humanitarian law, international civilian protection law, human rights, and the Geneva Conventions on civilian protection in armed conflicts.
He pointed out that the meeting discussed restructuring the committee, defining roles and responsibilities with a new vision that aligns with the current situation to help provide the necessary protection for civilians and prevent any gaps that could be exploited by countries hostile to Sudan to push for the entry of international forces into the country.
