UNSC Briefed on Abyei; Sudan Reaffirms Adherence to Frameworks Governing the Region
New York – Sudanhorizon
The UN Security Council (UNSC) received a debriefing on the situation in the Abyei region, Thursday.
The briefing, covering the period from April 16 to October 1, 2024, was presented by Jean-Pierre Lacroix, Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations, and Hanna Tetteh (Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa).
The session took place within the context of discussions regarding the renewal of the mandate for the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA), and included updates on the security situation over the recent period.
China, Russia, and the United Kingdom expressed their support for renewing the mission’s mandate, which is set to expire on November 15. Other nations called for adjustments and the inclusion of specific conditions regarding the mission’s operations. No resolution for the mandate’s renewal was announced during the session.
In this context, Ambassador Abu-Zaid Shams al-Din Ahmed, Chargé d’Affaires a.i. of Sudan’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations, delivered a statement on behalf of Sudan. He reaffirmed Sudan’s commitment to addressing the Abyei issue through dialogue, negotiation, consensus, and bilateral cooperation with the Republic of South Sudan.
Sudan’s statement highlighted the convening of the 17th meeting of the Joint Political and Security Mechanism between the two countries, as well as a decision by the Chairman of the Transitional Sovereignty Council to establish a high-level national team to negotiate on the Abyei issue—a move that underscores Sudan’s political will and its focus on resolving the situation in Abyei.
Sudan’s statement reaffirmed its full commitment to the political and legal frameworks governing the situation in Abyei, and called upon the Security Council and the United Nations to uphold these frameworks.
It also opposed any unilateral actions that could alter the status quo in Abyei, and reiterated its appreciation for the mission’s role, the sacrifices made by its personnel, and their efforts to protect civilians.
