Deputy Head of Farmers’ Union to Sudanhorizon: Power Outages Hamper Preparations for Winter Season
Sudanhorizon – Nazik Shammam
An official at the Farmers’ Union has revealed a number of obstacles and challenges facing preparations for the winter agricultural season, foremost among them frequent power outages and rising fuel prices.
Deputy Head of the Farmers’ Union, Gureig Kambal, said that although preparations for the winter season may appear satisfactory in theory, they require further improvements, preparation and organisation in practice, given the importance of the winter season as a pivotal period for agricultural production.
In an exclusive statement to Sudanhorizon, Kambal attributed the shortcomings in preparations primarily to frequent and prolonged electricity outages, alongside the sharp and significant increase in diesel prices, stressing that these factors pose major obstacles for farmers at this stage.
Kambal emphasised that the importance of this season lies in its capacity to produce key strategic crops, foremost among them sorghum. The crop is expected to help bridge the food gap resulting from disrupted and declining production in some rain-fed agricultural areas. He called on the relevant authorities to intensify their efforts and provide the necessary facilities to ensure the success of the season.
