Gedaref Trader Voluntarily Hands Over 3,000 Cartons of Expired Soap to Standards Authority

Khartoum – Sudanhorizon

A trader in Gedaref State voluntarily handed over 3,000 cartons of expired soap to the state office of the Sudanese Standards and Metrology Organization (SSMO) on Tuesday, following public awareness campaigns conducted by the authority and growing community support for consumer protection and the national economy.

The Director General of the Sudanese Standards and Metrology Organization, Rahba Saeed, said the organization continues to pursue a balanced strategy that combines regulatory and technical oversight with intensified public awareness campaigns targeting both the business community and consumers. She said the goal is to build strong public awareness that protects the country from non-compliant products while promoting a culture of quality standards.

Saeed noted that this growing awareness was clearly demonstrated by the voluntary report submitted by Al-Rayeh Omar Jad Karim, a trader in Gedaref, who informed the authorities that he was in possession of 3,000 cartons of expired soap.

According to the organization, the trader had purchased the shipment shortly before the outbreak of the war in 2023 and transported it to Gedaref for distribution. However, the conflict forced him and his family to leave the country. Upon his recent return, he discovered that the goods had remained in storage and had expired.

Acting out of what the authority described as a strong sense of ethics, national responsibility, and concern for consumer health and safety, the trader immediately reported the shipment to the SSMO office in Gedaref. After being briefed on the required technical procedures, he transported the entire shipment at his own expense and delivered it to the authority for disposal using approved scientific and environmentally safe methods.

The Director of the SSMO’s Gedaref branch, Dr. Al-Amin Al-Tayeb, praised Al-Rayeh Omar Jad Karim for his actions, describing his conduct as a model of integrity and social responsibility.

Dr. Al-Amin reaffirmed that the organization’s doors remain open to all stakeholders, producers, and members of the business community to strengthen voluntary compliance and cooperation in protecting Sudanese consumers and supporting the national economy.
