Sudan and Australia Institutions Form Research Partnership for Mineral Exploration in Sudan

Sydney – Sudanhorizon

Ahmed Haroun Al-Tom, Director General of the Sudanese Geological Research Authority, met with Anthony Cahalan, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Australia’s Macquarie University, to discuss establishing a research partnership aimed at advancing geological studies in Sudan. The collaboration will focus on leveraging remote sensing and satellite imaging technologies, as well as providing training and capacity-building for Sudanese researchers.
The meeting took place in Sydney and was initiated and coordinated by the Embassy of the Republic of Sudan in Australia and New Zealand.
Discussions covered the potential for conducting joint research on Sudan’s mineral resources, exchanging scientific and technical expertise, and expanding cooperation between the university and Sudanese research institutions. This initiative is intended to foster the development of geological knowledge and provide advanced scientific tools for the assessment of mineral resources.
Furthermore, the two sides reviewed a Macquarie University project—led by Professor Julian Cooper—focused on the preservation of historical gold mines in eastern Sudan. They explored opportunities to build upon this project, broadening the scope of joint research to encompass mining, archaeological documentation, and the protection of heritage associated with historical mining activities.
Al-Tom emphasized the importance of strengthening scientific partnerships with Australian universities, noting that tapping into their research and technical expertise will help advance geological studies and bolster national capabilities, ultimately supporting the responsible and sustainable utilization of Sudan’s mineral resources. For its part, the Sudanese Embassy affirmed that it would continue its efforts to facilitate communication between the authority and the university, and to follow up on proposed opportunities for cooperation—thereby helping to translate scientific understandings into research and training programs that support national institutions and open new horizons for academic collaboration between Sudan and Australia.
