Sudanese International Conference on Education and “Building Hope in Darfur”, Open Sessions in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Kuala Lumpur – Ahmed Abdul-Baqi
The Sudanese conference on “Education, Recovery, Humanitarian Action, and Sustainable Development in Sudan” started sessions this morning Wednesday in the Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur. Organized by the Sudanese Embassy in collaboration with the International Institute of Advanced Islamic Studies (IAIS) Malaysia, the event is held under the theme “Rebuilding Hope in Darfur: Education, Humanitarian Aid, and Sustainable Recovery.” The two-day conference aims to explore ways to foster cooperation to support Sudan’s recovery in the fields of education, health, and sustainable development.
The opening session was addressed by the Governor of the Darfur Region, Minni Minnawi; the Ambassador of the Republic of Sudan to Malaysia, Hassan Abdel-Salam; and the President of the International Institute of Advanced Islamic Studies (IAIS) Malaysia, Professor Mazli Malik. The session was attended by representatives from participating governments, diplomatic missions, humanitarian organizations, donor agencies, and various experts.
The sessions on the first day, held under the theme “From Emergency Education to Stability,” examines a number of papers covering topics such as classrooms, digital education, school reconstruction, teacher training, educational materials, psychological support, and child protection.
It is worth noting that Malaysia has played a pioneering role in supporting the reconstruction of Darfur. In 2007, former Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi appointed Tan Sri Ariff Fadzillah as his Special Envoy to Darfur. Furthermore, the charitable organization Mercy Malaysia has been active in humanitarian relief efforts in Darfur since 2004; it established a maternity, maternal, and child health unit at the El Geneina Hospital in West Darfur, deployed mobile clinics, and provided various medical equipment.
