The 25th Summit of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) begins today (Thursday) in Harare, the capital of Zimbabwe, with heads of state, government and heads of delegations in attendance.

Sudan is participating with a delegation led by Prime Minister Dr Kamil Idris, who arrived in Harare Wednesday evening. He was received at Harare International Airport by senior Zimbabwean government officials, alongside Sudan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ambassador Mohieddin Salem; the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Industry and Trade, Dr. Awad Salam; Sudan’s Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Ibrahim Al-Sheikh; and the embassy staff.

The summit is being held under the theme “One Market, One Future.” Its agenda includes a number of significant institutional and strategic topics, focusing on priority economic issues—most notably the removal of non-tariff barriers, the enhancement of intra-regional trade, the promotion of investment and industrialization, and maximizing the benefits derived from regional value chains.

The summit is also expected to address ways to develop innovative financing mechanisms, support entrepreneurship and productive projects, mitigate investment risks, and foster sustainable development across COMESA member states.

The summit holds particular significance for Sudan as it seeks to deepen its economic integration within the region and capitalize on opportunities offered by COMESA markets in trade, investment, and manufacturing.

Furthermore, the summit serves as a vital platform to support Sudan’s efforts to develop national exports, enhance trade and logistical connectivity with regional partners, and attract investment into priority productive sectors—including agriculture, livestock, mining, and manufacturing.

Additionally, COMESA initiatives—such as those aimed at removing non-tariff barriers and expanding financing and investment opportunities—offer promising prospects for strengthening the competitiveness of the Sudanese economy and maximizing the benefits derived from intra-African trade.
