Al-Burhan Revives Sudan Petroleum Corporation 7 Years After Its Dissolution, Appoints Abushouk as Secretary-General
Khartoum – Sudanhorizon
The President of the Transitional Sovereignty Council, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, has issued a decision to reinstate the Sudan Petroleum Corporation, seven years after its dissolution in 2019.
The decision comes as part of the state’s efforts to reform and reorganize the energy sector, enforce the Petroleum Resources Act, and reconstitute the Petroleum Council. The council will be chaired by the President of the Sovereignty Council and include senior officials and representatives of relevant sovereign, economic, and security institutions. Its membership will include the ministers of petroleum, finance, and justice, the Director of the General Intelligence Service, the head of the National Investment Authority, and a limited number of petroleum experts.
In a related decision, Al-Burhan appointed retired Rear Admiral Dr Ismail Osman Al-Hussein Abushouk as Secretary-General of the Sudan Petroleum Corporation.
The Sudan Petroleum Corporation plays a strategic role in developing and ensuring the efficient utilization of the country’s petroleum resources through exploration and production. It is also responsible for meeting the country’s needs for various petroleum products and securing strategic reserves.
The Sudan Petroleum Corporation was originally established as a sovereign entity responsible for managing the country’s petroleum resources. It was created under the Petroleum Resources Act of 1998 as a public corporation with independent legal personality and its headquarters in Khartoum. The corporation operated under the authority of the Petroleum Council, then chaired by the President of the Republic, and under the supervision of the Minister of Petroleum.
Following its dissolution in 2019, the corporation is now being reinstated with responsibilities aimed at consolidating the management of the petroleum sector and energy resources, improving operational efficiency, and serving the national economy.
