Juba Summons Sudanese Ambassador to Protest Bombing in Abyei Area
Juba – Sudanhorizon
South Sudan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation on Monday, summoned the Sudanese Ambassador to Juba, Issam al-Din Karrar.
The Ministry conveyed to him its protest and concern over an attack on the “Al-Na’am Market” in the Abyei area, accusing the Sudanese Armed Forces of carrying out the attack.
In a statement, the Ministry urged the Sudanese government to “refrain from any actions that could endanger the lives and property of civilians.” It further called for addressing any issues concerning the Abyei through established diplomatic channels and existing dialogue and communication mechanisms.
The government of Sudan has not issued an official statement confirming or denying the incident attributed to its military, nor has the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation provided further comment regarding the summoning of the ambassador.
Sudan and South Sudan have been in dispute over the status of the Abyei area since South Sudan’s secession in 2011. Although both nations agreed to hold a referendum, the process has been stalled due to disagreements over voter eligibility.
Recently, the Chairman of the Sudanese Transitional Sovereign Council issued a decree appointing Major General (Ret.) Al-Khair Abdullah Idris Abu Muridat as the head of the Sudanese side of the Abyei Joint Oversight Committee. He officially assumed his duties in Khartoum this October, succeeding the former head, Police Lieutenant General Dr. Hamid Mannan Mohammed.
