Riyadh – Sudan Horizon

Sudan has discussed arrangements for cooperation with Saudi Arabia and Saudi Aramco to secure regular, strategic supplies of petroleum products, in a move aimed at strengthening supply security and stabilizing the domestic market through a sustainable partnership with the company.

The discussions took place during a meeting between Sudanese Energy Minister Al-Muatasim Ibrahim Ahmed Ali and Saudi Assistant Minister of Energy Mohammed Abdulrahman Al-Ibrahim, along with several senior officials from the Saudi Ministry of Energy. The meeting was attended by Ambassador Dafallah Al-Haj Ali Osman and held on the sidelines of the minister’s participation in the International Energy Forum and the World Petroleum Conference in Saudi Arabia. The two sides discussed several priority projects and initiatives for Sudan’s energy sector.

In the area of oil exploration and production, the talks addressed opportunities to develop offshore and onshore oil blocks in the Red Sea region, as well as ways to encourage and attract Saudi private-sector investment in Sudanese oil exploration and production projects and capitalize on promising investment opportunities in the sector.

The meeting also discussed a project to establish an oil refinery in Port Sudan and opportunities for technical and investment cooperation with the Saudi side to implement the project. The initiative is intended to strengthen Sudan’s refining capacity and contribute to energy security.

In the electricity sector, the two sides discussed cooperation to rehabilitate and rebuild infrastructure damaged by the war. This would include assistance in providing the necessary equipment and supplies, exchanging technical expertise, building capacity, and benefiting from Saudi Arabia’s experience in developing electricity systems and improving their efficiency.

The meeting saw agreement on most of the issues discussed, with both sides agreeing on the next steps to advance cooperation and translate their understandings into practical projects and programmes that serve the mutual interests of the two countries.

The visit comes as part of Sudan’s efforts to strengthen its strategic partnerships with Saudi Arabia and attract the investment and expertise needed to rebuild and develop its energy sector, supporting broader economic recovery and reconstruction efforts.
