Port Sudan – Sudanhorizon
The Governor of the Darfur Region, Minni Arko Minnawi, has urged the Sudanese and Egyptian governments to exchange information regarding the investigation into the incident in which Sudanese miners were killed in the “North Wadi” area, near the Egyptian border.
On Wednesday, Minnawi held a meeting with the Egyptian Ambassador to Sudan, Yasser Sorour, in the presence of the Egyptian Consul, at the embassy’s headquarters in Port Sudan.
In a statement following the meeting, he said, “I call for strengthening coordination and cooperation between the Sudanese and Egyptian governments, and for the exchange of information concerning the investigations into the incident involving the Sudanese miners.”
He emphasized that this process should be conducted with transparency and accountability, ensuring that the facts are made clear to the public, providing reassurance to the victims’ families and the citizens awaiting the investigation’s findings, and facilitating the handling of the incident’s repercussions in accordance with the law.
Minnawi explained that the meeting addressed the aftermath of the incident, noting that most of those reported to have been killed were from Darfur region—a fact that necessitated a close follow-up on the circumstances and an effort to ascertain the truth from official sources.
He further stated that the Egyptian side expressed regret over the loss of life and offered condolences to the families. The Egyptian government affirmed its commitment to uncovering the full facts through an investigative committee—currently at work in cooperation with the Sudanese government—to help clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident. He added that the Egyptian ambassador and consul have called for restraint, urging against hasty reactions and cautioning against being swayed by circulating information or reports that could fuel emotions and escalate the situation.
Minawi also called on media outlets in both countries to observe accuracy and credibility in their reporting, and to avoid disseminating unverified news or hate speech. He emphasized the importance of media institutions upholding their professional and ethical responsibilities to help calm the atmosphere and foster a spirit of brotherhood and understanding between the two peoples.
Furthermore, he urged against exploiting the incident to make sweeping accusations or disparage an entire nation, stressing that such events should be addressed within a legal and objective framework, free from incitement or escalation.
