Sources: Quintet to Meet with Suumod and Tasis in Addis Ababa Next Monday and Tuesday

Informed sources confirmed that the Quintet Mechanism, comprising the African Union, the United Nations, the Arab League, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), and the European Union, will hold two meetings in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, next Monday and Tuesday, with the Suumod alliance and the Tasis entity, respectively.

In an exclusive statement to Sudanhorizon, the sources said the meetings would continue consultations held by the Quintet Mechanism with Sudanese national forces in Addis Ababa from July 29 to August 2, concerning preparations for the political process and the formation of a preparatory committee to lead the Sudanese dialogue. The Suumod alliance and the Tasis entity boycotted those meetings.

The sources revealed that the Tasis entity had wanted to hold its meeting with the Quintet Mechanism in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, but the mechanism rejected the proposal. They added that the Arab League would not attend the meetings in person, but would participate in the meeting with Suumod via videoconference. It would not participate in the meeting with Tasis, however, because it refuses to recognize the entity.

The sources explained that the Chairperson of the African Union Commission is expected to invite various Sudanese political forces during the current month to hear their views on the Sudanese crisis. They noted that Sudanese national forces would continue meeting with the Quintet Mechanism in the future if new developments arise, following the presentation of their views during previous meetings.

The sources stressed that the Quintet Mechanism’s meetings do not conflict with the Sudanese dialogue taking place inside Sudan, affirming that the two tracks can proceed in parallel as part of efforts to address the Sudanese crisis.
