Over 10,000 Missing or Detained: Government Committee Reveals Official Figures, Prepares for Exchange Process
Khartoum – Maryam Abshir – Sudanhorizon
The Committee for the Registration and Exchange of Detainees has recorded more than 10,000 people missing or held by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia.
The committee recently began carrying out its duties under a decision issued by Transitional Sovereignty Council Chairman General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan in August.
Information obtained by Sudanhorizon revealed that the government had completed preparations for its files containing the names of detainees and missing persons.
According to sources, the list was compiled based on reports submitted by victims’ relatives who responded to the committee’s calls and appeals. It includes civilians and members of the security services whose identities were verified through official documents held by their families.
The sources confirmed that the next step toward an exchange depends on the efforts of UN Secretary-General’s Envoy Pekka Haavisto.
The file concerning the exchange of detainees and prisoners of war between the Sudanese government and the Rapid Support Forces is being handled through UN efforts. The UN envoy previously announced that the Sudanese Armed Forces and the RSF had established communication channels with the United Nations to coordinate the release of detainees and the exchange of prisoners of war.
In a related development, the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, during his recent visit to New York, called on the International Committee of the Red Cross to intensify its efforts to facilitate the exchange of military prisoners and civilian detainees between the two parties to the conflict.
